A pumping device powered by steam and operated according to the principle of a pump
A steam reciprocating pump is a type of direct acting reciprocating pump powered by steam, usually horizontal. The working principle of a reciprocating pump is that steam enters the distribution chamber from the inlet pipe, and then enters the cylinder through the inlet on the left side of the cylinder. The cylinder piston moves to the right under the action of steam pressure, and the exhaust steam is discharged into the exhaust chamber from the exhaust port on the right side of the cylinder. At the same time as the cylinder piston moves, it pushes the pump chamber piston connected to the piston rod in the same direction, creating a vacuum in the left pump chamber of the water cylinder. Water is drawn into the left pump chamber through the suction pipe and the left inlet valve. At the same time, open the water outlet valve on the right to press out the water. When the cylinder piston moves to the top right position, the left movement of the connecting rod closes the inlet on the left side of the cylinder and opens the inlet on the right side, allowing steam to enter and the piston begins to move left again. The water pump piston draws water from the right and pumps it out from the left. By continuously reciprocating the water pump piston with the cylinder piston, water can be continuously drawn in and pressurized out.

Reciprocating pumps are suitable for conveying high-pressure, low flow, and high viscosity liquids, but are not suitable for conveying corrosive liquids. Sometimes it is directly driven by a steam engine to transport flammable and explosive liquids.
